Online IB MYP Maths Tutor in Switzerland: Finding the Right Support
International school parents in Switzerland often search for an online IB MYP Maths tutor when a learner's work suddenly seems less like a familiar textbook exercise. They may know the calculation but struggle to explain a method, interpret a context or decide which mathematical tool belongs in the problem.
The first question is not “Which chapter should we teach?” It is “What is your child's current unit asking them to do?” Ask the school for the task brief or bring a recent marked assignment to the first conversation.
MYP Maths is more than a list of topics
The IB's MYP Mathematics overview covers number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, with an emphasis on inquiry and application. Individual schools plan units within that framework. A tutor should not assume that a learner in a particular MYP year follows the same chapter order as every other school.
A student might solve an equation accurately in isolation but struggle when the equation is hidden inside a real situation. Another may reach the answer yet not communicate the reasoning clearly. Those needs call for different lesson plans.
A useful starting task
Choose one question from the student's current unit. Ask them to describe the information, the unknown and why their proposed method makes sense. Let them try it. If they stop, find the exact point: algebraic manipulation, interpreting the wording, reading a graph or connecting a result back to the context.
For instance, a student modelling the cost of a journey might write a correct linear rule but forget what the intercept represents. We can use a table and graph to connect the rule to the situation. A new example then shows whether the explanation sticks.
The lesson should include the student's own written or spoken reasoning. Watching a tutor produce a perfect solution is not enough preparation for doing unfamiliar work independently.
How to keep online lessons aligned with school
Send the current unit outline, recent work and the teacher's feedback. We can build a short sequence around one or two priorities and revisit them with a different task. If the school uses particular technology or notation, we should see that before choosing examples.
For a learner who is already succeeding, tutoring can deepen reasoning: compare methods, test whether a model makes sense and explain the limits of an answer. Extra challenge should remain connected to the school's work, not become a second curriculum competing for time.
Questions for a prospective tutor
- Can you work from our school's MYP unit and assessment task?
- Will you check both the calculation and the explanation?
- How will you distinguish a topic gap from difficulty interpreting a question?
- What independent task will show improvement after a few lessons?
Bring one assignment to a free parent consultation. We can decide whether the first lessons should strengthen a mathematical foundation or help the learner apply what they already know. For Diploma Programme families, our separate IB Math AA and AI guide explains why choosing the correct course matters.
Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
