Online IB Maths Tutor: Choosing Support for AA or AI

Searching for an online IB Maths tutor is only the beginning. “IB Maths” can mean Analysis and Approaches (AA) or Applications and Interpretation (AI), at Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL). A useful tutor conversation starts with the exact course and the student's current unit.

Tell the tutor which course you take

Share the course name, level and a recent assessment. If you struggle with functions in AA, a generic session on basic arithmetic will not address the immediate task. If interpreting a model in AI is difficult, more mechanical equation drills alone may not help either. Even students on the same course can need different priorities.

Ask the tutor to walk through a question with you and notice where your reasoning breaks: choosing a method, carrying out a calculation, interpreting the result or explaining it clearly. This is more informative than saying “I got 58%.”

What should an online session include?

The student should attempt questions during the lesson, explain choices and compare approaches. A worked example is useful when the tutor then removes support and asks the student to solve a similar problem. End with a short follow-up task and agree when to review it.

If an internal assessment is involved, tutoring should support mathematical understanding and planning while the student completes their own assessed work. Ask explicitly how the tutor handles academic honesty.
