HKDSE Physics Past Papers Aren’t Improving My Child’s Level — What’s Missing?

Past papers are essential for HKDSE Physics, but completing more of them does not guarantee a higher level.

When scores remain unchanged, the missing ingredient is usually not effort. It is what happens before and after each paper.

A score is not a diagnosis

Writing “48%” at the top of a script tells the student how they performed, not why.

Every lost mark should be classified:

• concept gap
• wrong principle or equation
• mathematics or unit error
• weak graph interpretation
• incomplete explanation
• misread instruction
• timing problem

Count the categories across several papers. The repeated pattern should shape the next week of study.

Mark schemes can be used too passively

Reading the official answer and thinking “that makes sense” is not correction. The student should explain what their own answer lacked, close the mark scheme and rewrite the response.

Several days later, attempt a different question testing the same idea. That second attempt is the real evidence of learning.

Full papers may be too broad

If one concept is weak, a full paper may expose it only once. Targeted practice gives the student enough repetition to repair the weakness.

Use this cycle:

1. identify one repeated error
2. revisit the underlying idea briefly
3. complete a focused question set
4. review and reattempt mistakes
5. return to timed mixed practice

The papers may be badly matched

Practice must reflect the appropriate assessment requirements. The official HKEAA Physics subject page should be the reference point for assessment frameworks and available materials.

Too much help can hide the true level

If the student checks notes, asks for prompts or sees solutions during practice, the final score may not represent independent performance.

Use support while learning, then complete a fresh set under closed-book conditions.
