HKDSE Physics: Why Students Understand the Lesson but Struggle in Exam Questions

Many students genuinely understand HKDSE Physics while the teacher is explaining it. They can follow worked examples, recognise the equations and answer direct classroom questions.

Then the examination changes the diagram, combines two ideas or asks for an explanation—and the student gets stuck.

This is not unusual. Following a lesson and producing an answer independently are different skills.

Recognition is not retrieval

During a lesson, the topic and method are already visible. In an exam, the student must decide:

  • which principle applies
  • which information is relevant
  • whether several stages are required
  • how to communicate the reasoning

A student may recognise a correct solution without being able to generate it from a blank page.

The question disguises the topic

Exam questions do not always announce “use conservation of energy” or “apply the motor effect”. The student must translate the physical situation into a model.

Before calculating, ask:

  1. What system or object am I analysing?
  2. What is changing?
  3. Which Physics principle explains that change?
  4. What quantity must I find or justify?

That pause prevents random equation hunting.

Worked examples can create false confidence

Watching ten solutions feels fluent because each next step makes sense. Improvement comes when the student attempts a new question before seeing the method.

Use worked examples in three stages: study one, complete a similar question with fewer prompts, then attempt an unfamiliar version independently.

The HKEAA Physics subject page provides assessment materials that can help students become familiar with the expected style.

Explanations need linked reasoning

Physics explanations should not be a collection of remembered keywords. Each sentence should connect cause and effect.

For example, stating that resistance increases is incomplete when the question asks why. The student must connect the changing condition to particle behaviour or the relevant physical relationship.

Correct mistakes by cause

After marking, label each error: wrong principle, missing step, algebra, unit, graph reading or explanation. Then answer another question testing the same skill.

If the main difficulty is slow or inaccurate working, read our guide on improving HKDSE Physics calculations.

At OTA Learning Studio, we help students move from “I understood it in class” to “I can solve it alone under exam conditions.” Book a free consultation if your child’s lesson understanding is not appearing in their HKDSE Physics results.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.

Support that begins with the learner’s real needs.

Lessons are personalised, international and designed to build understanding as well as confidence.
