Free IGCSE revision guide

A practical six-week IGCSE revision plan.

For learners who have been “revising” but still feel unsure: a clear way to diagnose weak topics, practise deliberately and turn mistakes into progress.

A useful revision plan does more than divide a textbook into days. It identifies what the learner cannot yet do, gives enough time to rebuild it, and checks whether the improvement survives under exam conditions.

Revision should answer one question every week: “What can I now do independently that I could not do before?”

Before week one: build the evidence

Collect the exam-board specification, recent school assessments, marked homework and at least one past paper. For each topic, use three simple labels:

  • Secure: the learner can answer standard and unfamiliar questions without help.
  • Developing: the method is partly understood, but mistakes or hesitation remain.
  • Priority: the learner cannot begin reliably or repeats the same misconception.

Do not spend equal time on every chapter. Start with priority topics that unlock other topics. In IGCSE Maths, weak fractions, algebra manipulation or ratio can affect many later areas. In Science, weak particle models, equations, units or graph interpretation can create problems across several modules.

The six-week structure

Week 1Complete a diagnostic paper or topic checks. Create a short priority list and an error log.
Week 2Rebuild the first high-impact weak topics using worked examples, retrieval and guided practice.
Week 3Rebuild the next priority topics and revisit week-two skills without notes.
Week 4Mix topics. Practise choosing the correct method when the question does not announce the topic.
Week 5Complete timed sections. Analyse lost marks by cause: knowledge, interpretation, method, accuracy or time.
Week 6Complete a full paper, repair the final recurring errors and practise the exam-day routine.

A strong 60-minute revision session

  1. 10 minutes — retrieval: answer short questions from memory on earlier topics.
  2. 15 minutes — repair: relearn one precise idea, not an entire broad chapter.
  3. 25 minutes — exam practice: move from standard questions to unfamiliar or multi-step questions.
  4. 10 minutes — reflection: mark carefully, correct the work and write one next step.

If a learner spends the hour copying notes, highlighting or watching solutions without attempting questions, the session may feel comfortable but produce little evidence of learning.

Use an error log properly

An error log should not simply list wrong question numbers. Record the topic, what went wrong, the corrected idea and a date to retry a similar question. Useful categories include:

  • Knowledge gap: a fact, formula or definition was not known.
  • Method gap: the learner knew the topic but could not organise the steps.
  • Interpretation error: the wording, graph or command word was misunderstood.
  • Accuracy error: signs, units, arithmetic or copying caused the lost mark.
  • Timing issue: too much time was spent on one low-value question.

What parents should check

Ask for evidence of improvement, not simply the number of hours spent studying. A helpful weekly conversation might cover:

  • Which topic moved from priority to developing or secure?
  • Which error appeared more than once?
  • Can the learner explain the corrected method without looking?
  • What is the single most important focus for next week?

When tutoring becomes useful

Independent revision may stall when the learner cannot identify the missing prerequisite, marks work inaccurately, avoids the hardest topics or repeatedly learns a method without understanding it. A tutor can shorten that cycle by diagnosing the exact problem, sequencing the repair and giving immediate feedback.
