IGCSE Physics Advice
My Child Understands Physics in Class but Cannot Answer Exam Questions — Why?
A student can follow every IGCSE Physics explanation in class and still struggle when answering exam questions alone. This does not mean they were pretending to understand.
Classroom understanding is often recognition. Examination performance requires retrieval, selection and application.
The lesson provides clues
During teaching, the topic is already known and the method is demonstrated. In an exam, the student must identify the topic hidden inside a new diagram, experiment or description.
Before writing, they should ask:
- What is changing in this situation?
- Which principle explains that change?
- What evidence or data must I use?
- Does the question require a calculation, description or explanation?
Worked examples can feel easier than they are
Watching a correct solution creates fluency because every step appears logical. Students need to attempt a similar problem with fewer prompts and then an unfamiliar version independently.
Explanations need cause and effect
Physics answers often contain relevant words but no connection. Encourage sentences that state the physical cause, the resulting change and the outcome in the question.
Correct errors by type
After each practice set, label errors: concept, equation choice, units, graph, explanation or command word. Then select the next question to repair that exact weakness.
Students following Cambridge can use the official IGCSE Physics 0625 past papers and examiner reports to understand how knowledge is assessed in unfamiliar contexts.
If repeated practice is not improving scores, read why Cambridge 0625 past papers sometimes fail to help.
At OTA Learning Studio, we help students move from following explanations to solving unfamiliar questions independently. Book a free consultation if classroom understanding is not turning into IGCSE Physics marks.
Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
