How to Turn SAT Math Word Problems Into Equations

The mathematics in a word problem may be familiar, but your child cannot decide where to begin. They underline numbers, try an operation and hope it produces one of the answer choices. The missing step is often translating the relationship, not performing the calculation.

Start by naming what each quantity represents. Then connect the quantities in an equation before looking for a shortcut. This gives both handwritten work and calculator methods a clear purpose.

Define the variable with its unit

Suppose a bike hire shop charges a fixed fee of $8 plus $3 per hour. A customer pays $26. Let h be the number of hours hired.

The equation is 8 + 3h = 26. The fixed fee appears once; the hourly charge is multiplied by the number of hours. Solving gives h = 6, so the hire lasted six hours.

Ask the learner to explain each term. If they write 8h + 3 = 26, the arithmetic may still be easy, but the model is wrong. Naming the charges reveals that mistake before any solving begins.

Use units to check the relationship

Three dollars per hour multiplied by h hours gives a charge in dollars. That can be added to the $8 fixed fee and compared with the $26 total.

If a question uses minutes while the rate is per hour, the units need reconciling. Do not assume every number can be substituted directly because it appears in the same paragraph.

For distance, a speed in kilometres per hour multiplied by hours gives kilometres. Dividing that speed by time would not give the requested distance. Units provide a practical check on the operation.

Read comparisons slowly

“Five less than twice a number” means 2x minus 5. It does not mean 5 minus 2x. Give x a simple value to test the phrase: twice 10 is 20, and five less is 15.

For percentage change, identify the starting amount. An increase of 20% multiplies the original by 1.2. A later decrease of 20% multiplies the new amount by 0.8, so the two changes do not simply cancel.

Try a starting value of 100. It rises to 120, then falls to 96. The example makes the changing reference quantity visible.

Distinguish the model from the requested answer

Sometimes the question asks for an expression, a rate or a parameter rather than a numerical solution. Read the last sentence before solving and keep that target beside the working.

In the bike example, a question about the fixed charge asks for 8, while a question about the hourly rate asks for 3. Neither requires finding h. Choosing the task first can save unnecessary calculation.

Our article on knowing the maths but missing SAT questions explains why this distinction affects capable learners too.

Use official questions for transfer

The official SAT Math overview describes content across algebra, advanced mathematics, data analysis and geometry. Worded contexts can call on different parts of that knowledge.

Practise a small mixed set with unfamiliar situations. Have the learner state the variables and relationship before calculating, then remove the prompts once the process is secure. Memorising the bike example alone will not prepare them for the next context.

At OTA Learning Studio, our online SAT Math lessons teach students to build equations they can explain. Book a free consultation with a word problem your child could not start. We can discuss a class package focused on interpretation, mathematical setup and independent practice.

A good first equation makes the rest of the question easier to handle because the learner knows what the numbers are doing.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.

Support that begins with the learner’s real needs.

Lessons are personalised, international and designed to build understanding as well as confidence.
