My Child Reads Fluently but Struggles With Comprehension: What Helps?

A child can read every word on a page and still find it hard to explain what the page means. If a teacher says your child needs reading comprehension help, ask which part is difficult: recalling information, understanding vocabulary, drawing an inference or supporting an answer with evidence.

Use three questions after a short passage

Choose a paragraph your child can read comfortably. Ask:

1. What happened? Let them retell it in their own words.
2. What might this character be thinking, and why?
3. Which words in the passage helped you decide?

If the child gives a plausible guess but cannot find supporting words, model one example: “She hid the letter and looked over her shoulder. That makes me think she is worried someone will see it.” Then ask them to find different evidence for another question.

Check vocabulary before harder questions

Sometimes the issue is one unfamiliar word that changes the meaning of the passage. Ask the child what they think the word means in that sentence, use nearby clues and then read the sentence again. The primary English curriculum connects reading development with understanding vocabulary and discussing texts.

Keep practice short and varied. A ten-minute conversation around an interesting passage often gives you more useful information than a pile of completed worksheets.
