Online IGCSE Maths lessons

What happens in an online IGCSE Maths lesson

Before booking online IGCSE Maths lessons, parents often want to picture the session itself. Will the tutor talk through a worksheet while the student watches, or will your child have to explain a method and try something independently?

At OTA Learning Studio, paid lessons take place through Google Meet. We discuss the course, practical setup and teaching goal in a free parent consultation first. The example below illustrates a possible algebra lesson, rather than a fixed script every learner must follow.

Start with a question that reveals the thinking

Suppose a learner is asked to solve 3(x − 2) = 15 and writes 3x − 2 = 15. The final answer is less useful than that first line: the student has not multiplied the whole bracket by three.

We can represent the expression as three copies of x − 2. Combining them gives 3x − 6. From 3x − 6 = 15, adding six gives 3x = 21, so x = 7. Substitution checks the answer because 3(7 − 2) = 15.

The student needs to explain that correction. A tutor should hear whether they understand the bracket or have simply copied a replacement line. That decides what happens next.

Change the example before increasing difficulty

Try 4(x + 1) = 28. Can the learner distribute the multiplication, solve x = 6 and check it without being told each operation? If not, another representation or a simpler related task may be needed.

Once the idea is secure, the tutor can connect it to a word problem. A rectangle with length x + 1 and width 3 has perimeter 20. Writing 2(x + 1) + 6 = 20 gives x = 6. The bracket now has a purpose in a model, not just an exercise heading.

This progression links procedure, meaning and application. It is one reason active teaching can add something beyond a video explanation or a completed answer sheet.

Match the material to the actual course

Before serious exam preparation, confirm the board, code, tier and examination year. For Cambridge, the Mathematics 0580 overview is an official starting point. Other qualifications need their own resources.

Some practice can teach a shared mathematical idea across boards. Assessment preparation must still reflect the learner's actual paper format and calculator requirements. A tutor should know when the lesson is repairing knowledge and when it is rehearsing a specific assessment demand.

Our guide to choosing an Edexcel IGCSE Maths tutor explains why course details change that discussion.

Make the student's working visible online

Agree how work will be shown before the lesson. Clear paper held to the camera or another suitable shared method can allow the tutor to follow a calculation. Spoken answers alone may hide the point where a mistake occurred.

Keep the necessary calculator and writing materials ready. Parents can help with the connection, then allow the learner to answer for themselves. A pause gives useful thinking time; it need not be filled immediately by an adult supplying a hint.

Tell us about access needs or difficulties with a proposed way of sharing work. The setup should support participation rather than make the student spend the session struggling with equipment.

End with a check and a next step

A short independent task can show whether today's idea is usable. Revisiting a fresh version later gives further information about retention. The next session should respond to that evidence instead of following an unchanged worksheet sequence.

Ask what the first priority would be for your child and how the proposed class package supports it. We confirm available times and fees before paid teaching begins. You should understand both what the learner will do in the lesson and how that work will connect with the week afterwards.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.

Support that begins with the learner’s real needs.

Lessons are personalised, international and designed to build understanding as well as confidence.
