USA Maths Competitions
Math Kangaroo 2027 Registration Is Open: Dates, Fees, Eligibility and How to Register
Registration for the Math Kangaroo 2027 Individual Competition is now open for students across the United States.
The competition is open to Grades K–12 and will take place on Thursday, 18 March 2027. This is also a special year for Math Kangaroo USA, marking its 30th Individual Competition. (mathkangaroo.org)
For parents considering registering their child, the most important thing is not simply securing a place.
It is understanding how registration works, which level your child must enter and how to use the months before March to prepare effectively.
Math Kangaroo 2027 registration dates
The main student registration period runs from:
15 September – 31 December 2026
Late registration is available from:
1 January – 1 February 2027
The competition takes place on:
18 March 2027. (mathkangaroo.org)
Parents should register early because some centres can reach capacity before the final deadline. Math Kangaroo itself notes that demand can exceed the number of available places in some areas. (mathkangaroo.org)
Who can take Math Kangaroo?
Math Kangaroo is open to students from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
A child must compete at their actual school grade level. Students are not permitted to enter at a lower level simply because the questions may feel easier. (mathkangaroo.org)
This makes preparation especially important.
Math Kangaroo is not simply a test of whether a student can perform routine school calculations.
The competition is built around mathematical thinking, logic and problem-solving.
How much does Math Kangaroo 2027 cost?
Math Kangaroo has published a lower fee during the regular registration period and a higher fee for late registration.
For the 2027 competition, its official information currently lists the late registration fee as $35 per student through 1 February 2027. Families should confirm the regular-registration amount shown during checkout because Math Kangaroo’s current official pages display differing regular-fee information. (mathkangaroo.org) (mathkangaroo.org)
Registering during the regular period is therefore the safest option both for availability and cost.
Where can students take the competition?
Families can choose from several participation formats depending on availability.
These can include:
in-person centres school-based centres proctored online centres remote participation * virtual self-proctored participation
Public centres accept students from different schools, while private centres normally require an invitation code from the school or organisation hosting the competition. (mathkangaroo.org)
Math Kangaroo also provides a searchable list of 2027 competition centres across the United States. (mathkangaroo.org)
Parents should check centre availability early instead of assuming the nearest location will remain open until December.
How should students prepare for Math Kangaroo?
This is where parents should be careful.
Math Kangaroo preparation should not become endless arithmetic worksheets.
The competition rewards children who can:
recognise patterns reason logically interpret diagrams solve unfamiliar problems choose efficient strategies stay calm when the answer is not immediately obvious
A child may be strong in school Maths and still find Math Kangaroo questions challenging because the style of thinking is different.
Start with age-appropriate competition-style problems and watch how your child approaches them.
Do they understand the question but choose the wrong method?
Do they give up when a problem looks unfamiliar?
Do they rush?
Do they struggle with multi-step reasoning?
Those observations are more useful than simply counting correct answers.
Do not wait until March to begin preparation
Students registering in September have roughly six months before the competition.
That is plenty of time when preparation is structured.
A simple progression could be:
September–November: strengthen problem-solving foundations and weaker Maths topics.
December–January: introduce more Math Kangaroo-style questions and reasoning practice.
February–March: increase timed practice, review mistakes and improve competition technique.
The aim is not to turn every week into exam preparation.
It is to gradually make challenging Maths feel more familiar.
Is Math Kangaroo suitable for your child?
Math Kangaroo can be valuable for children who enjoy Maths, but it can also help pupils who need to develop stronger reasoning and problem-solving confidence.
The most useful question is not whether your child is already a “Maths genius”.
It is whether they can be taught to think through unfamiliar problems instead of becoming stuck when the method is not obvious.
That skill is useful far beyond one competition.
