My Child’s IGCSE Biology Mock Grade Dropped — What Should We Fix First?

When an IGCSE Biology mock grade drops, the natural reaction is to increase revision immediately. But more revision is not always the same as better revision.

Before your child restarts the syllabus, find out exactly where the marks went.

Check marks before comparing grades

One paper may be more demanding than another. Compare the raw marks, topics and question types—not only the letter or number grade.

Look through the marked script and label each lost mark:

• content not remembered
• knowledge not applied to the question
• vague scientific wording
• graph, data or calculation error
• practical-method weakness
• command word misunderstood
• question unfinished because of time

The largest category is the first priority.

Identify whether the problem is broad or concentrated

A disappointing result can come from two very different situations.

One student has small gaps across much of the course. Another understands most topics but lost a large block of marks on genetics, ecology, plant transport or human physiology.

If errors are concentrated, choose the two weakest areas and repair them properly. If they are spread widely, test the foundations before moving to difficult application questions.

Check the paper route and syllabus

Make sure revision matches the correct Cambridge syllabus and paper route. Cambridge provides the current IGCSE Biology 0610 syllabus and assessment resources for centres and candidates.

A student preparing with unsuitable questions may appear busy while missing the style and depth of the examination they will actually sit.

Fix application before adding more notes

If your child can explain a topic verbally but struggles when it appears in a new experiment or graph, another set of notes may not solve the problem.

Use this routine:

1. Review one concept briefly.
2. Answer three focused questions without notes.
3. Mark them carefully.
4. Rewrite incomplete answers.
5. Return to the same skill several days later.

Treat practical and data skills separately

Students often say they “lost marks in Biology” when the real difficulty was identifying variables, evaluating a method, calculating percentage change or describing a graph accurately.

These skills deserve their own short practice sessions. They should not be buried inside general topic revision.

What should be fixed first?

Use this order:

1. repeated knowledge gaps worth several marks
2. application and command-word errors
3. practical, graph and calculation weaknesses
4. timing and avoidable mistakes

Then use fresh questions to check whether the weakness has actually improved.
