IGCSE Biology Exam Technique: Why Memorising the Textbook Isn’t Enough

Memorising definitions and processes gives an IGCSE Biology student essential knowledge. But examinations also ask students to select, apply and communicate that knowledge in unfamiliar situations.

That is why strong recall does not always produce a strong mark.

The exam changes the context

A student may learn diffusion using one diagram, then meet it through plant tissue, gas exchange or an experiment. The principle is unchanged, but the student must recognise it without the familiar textbook presentation.

Mark-worthy answers are selective

Writing everything remembered wastes time and may miss the actual question. Students should underline the command word, identify the number of marks and decide which biological points are relevant.

For Cambridge candidates, the official command-word guidance helps clarify what different instructions require.

Data must be used, not merely repeated

When a question provides a graph or table, a strong answer combines evidence with biological reasoning. Students should quote an appropriate pattern or comparison and then explain it.

Practical questions test decisions

Students need to understand variables, controls, accurate measurement, repeatability, safety and improvements. Memorising one method is insufficient when the investigation changes.

Use active exam practice

A reliable study cycle is:

  1. review a small section
  2. retrieve it without notes
  3. answer focused questions
  4. mark and rewrite weak responses
  5. revisit the skill using a new context

Do not save exam questions until the whole syllabus has been revised. Questions reveal which knowledge is usable.
