IGCSE Chemistry Advice
My Child Was Good at Science Until IGCSE Chemistry — What Changed?
It can be confusing when a child who was always “good at Science” begins struggling with IGCSE Chemistry. The student has not suddenly lost their ability. The subject has changed what it demands from them.
Knowledge becomes more connected
Earlier Science may reward remembering facts and following familiar procedures. IGCSE Chemistry expects students to connect particle ideas, bonding, equations, energy, rates and quantitative relationships.
A gap in one foundation can appear across several topics.
Symbolic language becomes essential
Formulae, ionic equations, state symbols and balanced reactions compress chemical ideas into precise notation. A student may understand the explanation verbally but lose marks when translating it into symbols.
Mathematics carries chemical meaning
Moles, concentration, gas volumes, yield and purity are not ordinary arithmetic exercises. Students must understand the reaction before choosing the calculation.
Our guide to moles and stoichiometry in IGCSE Chemistry explains this transition.
Questions require application
Exams may present unfamiliar substances, experiments or data. The student must recognise a familiar principle inside a new context rather than repeat a memorised paragraph.
Revision habits must change
Rereading and highlighting can create confidence without retrieval. Strong IGCSE revision combines brief content review, closed-book explanation, focused questions and correction.
Cambridge students should keep preparation aligned with the official IGCSE Chemistry 0620 resources; Edexcel students should follow their Pearson specification.
What should parents do next?
Use a recent paper to identify whether the main issue is foundational knowledge, equations, calculations, application or practical questions. Choose two priorities instead of asking the student to revise everything.
At OTA Learning Studio, we help capable Science students adapt to the precision and problem-solving required by IGCSE Chemistry. Book a free consultation if your child’s previous confidence is no longer reflected in their results.
Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
