IB Maths AA tutoring

How to choose an IB Maths AA tutor for your child

An IB Maths AA tutor needs more than familiarity with calculus rules. Your child may manipulate expressions correctly yet struggle to justify a result, connect a graph with an equation or begin a question whose method is not named.

At OTA Learning Studio, our online Maths lessons can focus on those connections. Book a free consultation with the student's AA level, assessment year and a recent attempt. We discuss suitability, Google Meet lesson arrangements and fees before paid teaching begins.

Confirm AA and the level before planning

Analysis and approaches is offered at Standard Level and Higher Level. Ask the school for the exact course and examination session. A tutor should not build an HL plan from SL resources or treat all IB mathematics as one course.

The IB mathematics overview identifies the current options and the transition to revised courses first assessed in 2029. A student taking an earlier examination needs the materials for that cohort. The assessment year matters alongside the course name.

Ask what the school has covered and which topics are coming next. Extra teaching should connect with that sequence while repairing prerequisites where necessary.

Listen for the reason behind a mathematical step

Consider the expression (x² − 9)/(x − 3). For x not equal to 3, it simplifies to x + 3. At x = 3, however, the original expression is undefined. The cancellation does not permit division by zero.

A useful lesson asks the learner to explain the restriction and connect it with a graph containing a missing point. The limiting value as x approaches 3 is 6, even though the original function has no value there.

This example brings algebra, functions and a calculus idea together. A tutor who only demonstrates cancellation may miss the precise distinction the student needs to understand.

Expect an active online lesson

After discussing the example, change it to (x² − 16)/(x − 4). Can the student simplify, state the restriction and describe the limiting value without prompts? Then ask what changes for (x² − 16)/(x + 4).

The learner should show working and explain decisions. Shared material is useful, but a continuous tutor monologue gives little evidence of what the student can do alone. Ask how unfinished attempts are seen during Google Meet lessons.

Appropriate challenge depends on the starting point. Some learners need factorisation repaired first. Others are ready to discuss a more demanding argument. The same worksheet should not dictate both lessons.

Check assessment preparation and independent work

Ask how written reasoning, calculator work and relevant assessment demands fit the plan. Learning a method and communicating it in a complete response are connected but distinct tasks.

Our guide to IB Maths grades that remain at 4 or 5 explores how to locate the repeated barrier. A starting priority should come from the work, not an assumption that every student needs more full papers.

For the internal assessment, teaching can support mathematical understanding and discussion of appropriate methods. The student must retain responsibility for their own exploration and writing. Ask what support means before requesting someone to develop an assessed submission for them.

Make the first booking a clear decision

Bring the course level, recent working and intended goals to the consultation. Tell us whether the concern is current classwork, exam questions or confidence with a particular topic. You do not need to diagnose the exact mathematical weakness yourself.

We can discuss a first lesson focus, available times and class packages. Ask how progress will be checked on new questions after a gap. You should leave knowing what the proposed teaching is for, how your child will participate and what the paid arrangement covers before deciding to enrol.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.

Support that begins with the learner’s real needs.

Lessons are personalised, international and designed to build understanding as well as confidence.
