IGCSE Chemistry Advice
My Child Is Struggling With IGCSE Chemistry — Where Should We Start?
When a child is struggling with IGCSE Chemistry, the newest topic is not always the real problem. Chemistry builds layer upon layer, so an earlier weakness can reappear in equations, calculations, practical work and explanations.
The best starting point is the earliest gap still costing marks.
Diagnose the type of error
Use a recent test and classify mistakes:
- concept not understood
- formula or equation incorrect
- calculation or unit error
- theory known but not applied
- practical or data question weak
- chemical explanation too vague
The biggest category should guide the first two weeks of support.
Check the high-impact foundations
Important foundations include particle ideas, atomic structure, bonding, formulae, balanced equations, the mole, acids and bases, redox and interpreting experimental evidence.
Test them briefly. Do not make the student reread every chapter when only two foundations are blocking progress.
Use questions immediately
After reviewing a small concept, close the notes and complete focused questions. Mark them, identify the missing reasoning and reattempt a similar question later.
If numerical work is the main difficulty, read our guide on IGCSE Chemistry calculations pulling a grade down.
Follow the correct exam board
Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel specifications differ. Cambridge students should use the official IGCSE Chemistry 0620 resources while Edexcel students should follow their school’s Pearson specification.
Keep the recovery plan realistic
Choose two weak topics, one calculation skill and one short mixed review each week. Measure improvement through fresh questions rather than hours spent copying notes.
At OTA Learning Studio, we use marked work to locate the foundation preventing progress. Book a free consultation if your child is struggling with IGCSE Chemistry and you need a clear place to begin.
Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
