HKDSE Physics Advice

My Child Is Struggling With HKDSE Physics — What Should We Do in S5 or S6?

When a student starts struggling with HKDSE Physics in S5 or S6, the difficulty can appear sudden. Lessons move quickly, earlier ideas reappear inside harder problems, and one weak area can affect several chapters.

The right response is not to restart every topic. First identify what is breaking down.

Find the type of difficulty

Use a recent test or school examination and sort lost marks into four groups:

  • the concept was not understood
  • the correct equation or principle was not recognised
  • the mathematics or unit conversion went wrong
  • the explanation lacked precise physical reasoning

This distinction matters. A student with algebra errors needs different support from one who cannot explain electromagnetic induction.

The official HKEAA Physics subject information provides the assessment framework and subject resources that should guide preparation.

In S5, protect the foundations

S5 students still have time to build depth, but gaps should not be allowed to accumulate.

Return to the prerequisites behind the weak topic. For example, mechanics may require secure graph interpretation, vectors and rearranging equations. Electricity may expose uncertainty about current, potential difference, resistance and circuit relationships.

After reviewing a concept, the student should solve a small progression of questions: direct, multi-step, then unfamiliar.

In S6, prioritise by marks and frequency

S6 preparation must be more selective. Use school exam evidence to identify the topics and question types losing the most marks.

A practical weekly plan should include:

  1. repair of one weak concept
  2. focused questions on that concept
  3. timed mixed practice
  4. correction and reattempt of errors

Past papers alone are not enough when the same misunderstanding keeps producing the same wrong answer.

Make calculations readable

Students should write the relevant relationship, substitute values with units and show the working before giving the final answer. This reduces calculator mistakes and makes it easier to diagnose where a solution failed.

Our guide on why Physics equations still cost students marks explains the calculation habits that transfer well to HKDSE preparation.

Do not separate theory from questions

Reading a chapter and answering questions weeks later creates false confidence. Each short review should be followed immediately by application.

At OTA Learning Studio, we use marked work to locate the exact mixture of concept, calculation and exam-technique problems. If your S5 or S6 child is struggling with HKDSE Physics, book a free consultation so we can decide what to repair first.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.

Support that begins with the learner’s real needs.

Lessons are personalised, international and designed to build understanding as well as confidence.
