IGCSE Biology Advice

My Child Knows IGCSE Biology but Keeps Losing Marks — Here’s What May Be Wrong

Some students can explain an IGCSE Biology topic clearly at home and still lose marks when it appears in an examination. The knowledge may be present, but the answer is not meeting the precise demand of the question.

The student is recalling instead of applying

An exam may place a familiar idea inside an unfamiliar organism, experiment or graph. Students who search for an identical textbook example may think they have never learnt the topic.

They should identify the clue in the question, name the relevant biological concept and connect that concept to the result shown.

The language is too general

Answers such as “it gets more energy” or “the plant grows better” often need a biological mechanism. Which process changes? Which substance moves? What causes the effect?

Precise vocabulary matters, but keywords must be connected logically rather than scattered into the answer.

Command words are being treated alike

Describe usually focuses on what is shown. Explain requires biological reasoning. Suggest asks the student to use knowledge and evidence in a less familiar context.

Cambridge candidates can use the official guide to examination command words to understand these differences.

Data and practical skills are costing marks

Graph interpretation, variables, method improvements, percentage change and conclusions can lower an otherwise strong Biology result. Treat these as skills requiring deliberate practice—not as minor extras.

Corrections are not transferring

Reading a mark scheme and agreeing with it feels useful, but the student should rewrite the answer and later attempt a new question testing the same skill.

At OTA Learning Studio, we identify exactly where secure knowledge stops turning into marks. Book a free consultation if your child knows IGCSE Biology but their examination result does not show it.

Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
