GCSE Maths Tutoring
AQA or Edexcel GCSE Maths why your tutor should know the exam board
Updated 16 October 2026.
Your child's exam board matters when choosing GCSE Maths tutoring because the resources, papers and marking guidance must match the qualification they are taking. The underlying mathematics connects across courses, but that does not make every practice paper the right assessment preparation.
Ask the school for the board, qualification name and tier before arranging support. AQA GCSE Mathematics is identified by 8300; Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics by 1MA1. A revision book with the right board name but a different qualification can still be unsuitable.
Start with the course code rather than a guess
The AQA specification overview and Pearson Edexcel GCSE Maths page are official starting points. Confirm whether your child is taking England's GCSE or an International GCSE course. “Edexcel Maths” alone is not enough detail.
Bring a recent school paper or course information to the first conversation. If the school is still reviewing tier entry, say so. A tutor can discuss current learning needs while asking you to confirm the assessment arrangements, instead of quietly building a programme around an assumption.
Expect mathematics teaching before paper technique
Board knowledge does not replace a clear explanation. If the student cannot interpret a percentage change, memorising the appearance of a familiar paper will not resolve the difficulty. Useful tutoring combines secure understanding with appropriate assessment practice.
Here is an original example: a bicycle costs £180 and rises in price by 15%. Ten per cent is £18 and five per cent is £9, so the increase is £27 and the new price is £207. Multiplying 180 by 1.15 provides another method. Ask the student what the multiplier represents, not only which calculator buttons to press.
A reverse question needs a different decision. If £207 is the price after a 15% increase, dividing by 1.15 gives £180. Subtracting 15% of £207 uses the wrong base. A tutor should teach that distinction, then select course appropriate questions to check it in unfamiliar wording.
Use marking guidance to review visible methods
Official mark schemes help the tutor review what a particular question awards credit for. The student should write an equation, calculation or relationship that makes their method understandable. A correct answer can be checked; an unfinished attempt can reveal where the process stopped.
Do not assume every question awards a method mark simply because some working appears. The relevant mark scheme and the actual mathematics matter. The tutor should use this information to improve the student's reasoning and presentation, rather than train them to write arbitrary lines for imagined marks.
Practise under the right conditions when ready
Confirm which paper allows a calculator and follow the instructions of the selected material. For both AQA 8300 and Edexcel 1MA1, the qualification includes non calculator and calculator papers. Your tutor should help with both mental or written methods and sensible calculator use.
Start with explanation and independent practice when a topic is unfamiliar. Later, timed questions can test decision making and pacing. Avoid turning every early lesson into a full timed paper when the learner cannot yet explain the method being assessed. Our first lesson guide shows a more focused starting sequence.
Do not choose a board based on online rumours
A tutor should not promise that switching board will produce an easier grade or that they know which questions will appear. School entry arrangements, current teaching and the learner's evidence need to guide decisions. Discuss any proposed course change with the school or exam centre.
Official grading guidance explains that grade boundaries reflect assessment difficulty. A percentage from one paper is not a universal future grade. Compare learning evidence carefully instead of ranking boards by isolated boundary numbers.
Ask about the actual teaching plan
Bring your child's board, tier and recent working to a free parent consultation with OTA Learning Studio. We discuss a possible starting priority, Google Meet lesson arrangements and the fee privately before paid support begins. Ask how the resources and progress checks would fit your child's confirmed course.
Keep the momentum going. A simple, consistent routine can make returning to school feel much more manageable.
