AP English Literature: My Child Reads the Books but Struggles With the Exam. Why?

Start with recent evidence: a marked script, a timed section, school writing or a recorded response. Label each weakness instead of circling the final score. Look for:

• misunderstanding the exact instruction
• selecting weak or irrelevant evidence
• stopping the explanation too early
• inaccurate grammar, vocabulary or expression
• poor organisation or weak paragraph purpose
• timing, hesitation or unfinished work

The first practical step is to practise moving from detail to interpretation and then to a defensible claim. Keep that priority stable long enough to test whether it improves fresh work.

A practice cycle that produces progress

A focused cycle should include:

1. a short explanation or model of the skill
2. guided practice where the thinking is made visible
3. independent work without prompts
4. precise correction of the actual error
5. a delayed retest using new material

Many learners stop at step four. They understand the correction while looking at it, but they have not yet proved that they can transfer the method. The delayed retest is what turns feedback into learning.

What parents should monitor

Ask what specific error is being reduced this week. “I studied English” is difficult to evaluate. “I can now distinguish a supported inference from an attractive assumption” or “I can plan a comparative paragraph before writing” shows a usable change.

Track accuracy, completion and the number of repeated errors across comparable tasks. A total score may fluctuate, but better decisions should become visible before the final result rises.
