2027 HKDSE Registration: Deadline, Eligibility, Fees and How to Apply
Registration for the 2027 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) is now open.
Students intending to sit the examination next year can register between 11 September and 7 October 2026, with examination fees due by 11:59 p.m. on 14 October 2026.
Whether your child is entering through a school or registering as a private candidate, these are the dates families should not miss.
2027 HKDSE registration deadline
The main registration period is:
11 September – 7 October 2026
The deadline for paying examination fees is:
14 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m.
Candidates who miss the normal payment deadline may make late payment between 15 and 20 October 2026, but HKEAA states that an additional HK$321 supplementary fee will apply.
So registration and payment should ideally be completed early.
Who can register for the 2027 HKDSE?
There are two main routes.
School candidates
For the 2027 examination, school candidates must generally be bona fide Secondary 6 students in the 2026/27 school year studying at a registered school approved to participate in the HKDSE.
Schools normally handle the registration process with their students.
Private candidates
A person can normally register directly as a private candidate when they:
have previously sat an HKDSE; or will be 19 years old by 1 January 2027.
Students who do not meet either condition may still qualify through the special-entry route, particularly where they have taken an equivalent public examination or are completing a non-HKDSE curriculum equivalent to Secondary 6.
Those applications are considered individually by HKEAA.
What if your child studies an international curriculum?
This is particularly important for families whose children are studying outside the standard HKDSE school route.
A student following another Secondary 6-equivalent curriculum may need to apply for special entry as a private candidate and provide documents showing their academic background and curriculum.
The special-entry application period for the 2027 HKDSE runs until 7 October 2026.
HKEAA states that special-entry applicants must also complete the normal HKDSE registration process separately. The information is not automatically transferred between the two systems.
That is an easy step to overlook.
What are the 2027 HKDSE examination fees?
The total amount depends on factors including:
whether the student is a school or private candidate the subjects being taken the candidate's status whether supplementary services or late applications are needed
HKEAA has already published the 2027 HKDSE examination and supplementary fees and provides an online examination-fee calculator for candidates who want to estimate their total cost.
One additional cost worth noting is for special entry: the 2027 Special Entry Application Fee is HK$2,500.
This is separate from the normal examination fees.
How do private candidates register?
Private candidates register through the HKDSE Examination Online Services.
Before submitting the application, prepare the required identification and supporting information carefully.
For candidates applying through special entry, documents may include:
valid identification evidence of academic qualifications school transcripts or certificates evidence of the curriculum being studied * parental or guardian consent where applicable
HKEAA can also request additional supporting information depending on the applicant's circumstances.
Do not leave document preparation until 7 October.
Important 2027 HKDSE dates
Parents and students should save these dates:
Registration: 11 September – 7 October 2026 Exam fee deadline: 14 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Late payment period: 15–20 October 2026 Late entry/subject amendment period: 16 November – 4 December 2026, tentatively Category A written examinations: 6 April – 3 May 2027, tentatively 2027 HKDSE results: 14 July 2027, tentatively
The examination may still feel months away, but registration is happening now.
Registration is only the beginning
Once registration is completed, the next question should be:
Is the student academically on track for the grades they need?
September and October are valuable months for identifying weak topics before serious examination-paper practice begins.
Students struggling with Mathematics, English or other academic subjects should not wait until early 2027 to discover that major gaps remain.
